Canoe Trip Routes
Fall Lake to Mudro Lake
Nice four, five or six day canoe trip with excellent scenery on the Basswood River. Trip can be extended to Wednesday or Thursday Bay of Crooked Lake, exiting the area at either Mudro Lake,
from Friday Bay through Pappoose, Wagosh, Gun, Boot, Fourtown or back down the Basswood River to the Horse River and out at Mudro Lake. Or go through Fourtown or south from Horse through Murphy and Sandpit Lakes to Mudro
Lake. Good fishing area for walleye, northern pike and small mouth bass.
Mudro Lake to Moose River or Moose
River to Mudro Lake
If you choose this trip allow
yourself 7 or more days. There are 7 portages to Lac La Croix, 2
more to Crooked Lake and 6-7 more to the Mudro Lake exit.
Excellent scenery and waterfalls exist on this route. Fishing is
outstanding for small mouth bass, walleye and northern pike,
especially on Iron lake, Saturday and Thursday Bays of Crooked
Lake. You'll cover 45-55 miles, so if you decide on traveling
this route and want a day layover you will have to cover about
nine miles per day.
Fall Lake to Moose River
Similar to the Mudro/Moose River
trip except you are starting at Fall Lake. You have two portages
to get to Basswood River, with four portages on Basswood River.
This trip has more paddling than portaging, with only 15
portages total. This trip can be made easily in 7 days, even
with a layover day.
Lake One to Kawishiwi Lake
Starting at Lake One, and ending
at Kawishiwi Lake. You can also reverse this route, and go with
the slow moving current, but you'll have the two longest
portages on your first day with full packs instead of your last
day when most of your food weight is gone. Fishing is walleye
and northern pike, with some really big bluegills on some lakes.
This is a fabulous route for Scout, School or church groups.
Many nice day trips or expanded route possibilities.
Moose Lake to Moose Lake
From Moose Lake go northeast to
Knife lake and down through Kekekabic and into Thomas, then
through Jordan, to Ashigan and into Ensign. Take Sucker Lake
back down to Moose and your back where you started. A great loop
into more of the heart of the BWCA. This is where you'll see
moose, deer and bald eagles. Some hiking possibilities exist
here on the south shore of Kekekabic Lake.
Fall Lake to Fall Lake
From Fall Lake to Basswood Falls
and up the Basswood River until you get to the Horse River. Then
go into the Horse River, which is a small and slow moving
river...with plenty of wildlife, you'll come to the Horse lake
and then into Murphy and Sand Pit Lakes. You'll go east into
Jackfish Bay of Basswood Lake and back into Fall Lake through
Pipestone bay and Newton Bay. Nice scenery and easy paddling, a
great five day route. Fish for small mouth bass, northern pike,
and walleye.
Island
River to south Kawishiwi camp ground (Hwy 1) If
you enjoy river travel this trip goes from Island River and down
the Isabella River into Bald Eagle Lake, through Gabbro Lake and
then into the Kawishiwi River and either north through Clear
Lake or southwest down the Kawishiwi River for pick-up at the
campground there. Good five to seven day basecamping trip with
plenty of time for day tripping and loafing next to the water.
Large northern pike, walleye and small mouth bass inhabit these
lakes, with even large mouth bass in Clear Lake.
>>Quetico Park Canoe Trip
Routes
Nym Lake ( north side of Quetico) to
Moose Lake (U.S.)
If you can escape from the world
for 10 -14 days this route offers excellent fishing, excellent
scenery and the opportunity to really get away from it all,
including other people. There are sparkling rapids, some really
great waterfalls, beautiful cliffs, excellent small mouth bass,
walleye, northern pike and lake trout fishing. Most parties say
they would liked even more time to explore and fish. In our
opinion this is probably the best canoe trip in the
BWCA/Quetico. Prairie Portage to
Sarah/McIntyre and out to Mudro Lake Put
your reservations in early for the beauty. This route offers
quite a bit of paddling and portaging, but if you would like to
get into lakes that are not visited or fished much, it will be
worth the effort. Most parties exit at Mudro instead of Moose.
Fabulous fishing and a great adventure. We suggest 7 days or
more for this route, Tow Service to Prairie Portage your first
day. We don't recommend this trip for beginners. 21 portages,
with the longest about 1/2 a mile. Prairie
Portage to South Chain and back Leaving
Prairie Portage you'll paddle into Burke and into North Bay of
Basswood Lake. From there you'll head northeast through South,
West, Shade, Noon, Summer, Sultry, and Silence lakes into Agnes
Lake. Then go south into Meadows and west into Sunday Lake. From
Sunday go to Burke and then back to Prairie Portage. We suggest
Tow Service both to and from Prairie Portage because you can
then make the trip in 5 days of travel, leaving two days for a
layover so you can loaf or fish and explore. Trip also goes past
Louisa Falls on your last full day. Fly
In/or Fly Out Trips Fly
in from Crane Lake to Lac La Croix and you'll see plenty of
beautiful country from the air. This also allows you to get
deeper into canoe country on your first day. Our favorite route
starts at the old ranger station on Lac La Croix to McAree, Minn
Lake and down the Darky River into Darky Lake. Then you could go
many directions depending on what you decide. Great scenery,
excellent fishing, Indian paintings in the south end of Darky
Lake. Base Camp
Fishing Trips
We suggest these two areas for
setting up camp without having to ever portage. Well, we also
want to keep these areas to just a few people so you'll have to
book a trip with us and we'll share these places. Both areas are
portage free when you use our Tow Service or fly-in service. You may also check out the food list, reservation
form, and price list online by clicking on them. |
